Three silverfish on top of a book.

In order to get rid of pests, you have to know where to find them. When we think of the types of places insects hide, we tend to think first about underground or outdoor nests. Or if we think about an indoor insect infestation, we might think about hidden areas within a home or building, such as the interior of a wall or through pipes. But pests can be a lot closer than you think and can actually show up in the living space of your home. Arrow Exterminating wants you to know that there are several pests that are nearby because they feast on paper or cardboard and we want to let you know what to look for.

All About Silverfish

One pest most commonly associated with paper is the silverfish. They are flat insects with two thin long antennae on the front and three thin bristles on their rear. Their body is carrot shaped and they’re about a half inch long.  According to the parenting website Mom.me, silverfish prefer wet, humid and moist habitats. They also like to eat paper, wood, wall paper and glue. Silverfish damage book bindings, photographs and papers, particularly paper with ink, which they find more nutritious.

Cockroaches, Termites

Cockroaches are among the most common household pests, and three of the most common types of roaches are the American, Oriental and German Cockroach. All of these species feed on paper products. Like silverfish, cockroaches like to be in moist, warm places. They also hide in dark places out of sight. Cockroaches will feed on paper, books, glue and garbage.

One type of insect well known for feeding on wood-based products is the termite. Usually, they are known for eating wood, but they also damage books and paper as well as things like insulation or swimming pool liners. Termites can even dissolve objects like book covers, bindings and pages.

Crickets and Cardboard

There are more than 25 species of field crickets and run anywhere from half an inch to 1&1/4 inches. They’re known for their large hind legs used for jumping. They’re also known to nibble on cardboard. They can eat their way into and out of cardboard boxes.
