Opossum and squirrel

Opossum and squirrelSometimes furry creatures can be both lovable and problematic. We love squirrels when we see them in the park, but they’re a huge problem if they get inside your house. Possums tend to be gentle animals, but they do have sharp teeth and they have a habit of getting into people’s trash. These creatures can be a problem all year round. If they should find their way into your home or damage your property, you’ll want to get rid of them. That’s not always easy because there are laws related to the removal of wildlife and you want the job taken care of professionally. That’s why you need the pest control experts at Arrow Exterminating.

Squirrels and the Home Damage They Cause

In addition to searching for acorns and running around with bushy tails, squirrels can do damage to your home. According to the Spruce, squirrels can enter your structure by chewing openings through siding or getting inside underneath eaves. They can also get inside through chimneys and other vents that go out to your home’s exterior. Once inside, they can chew on your insulation and wiring. Squirrels can also cause damage to your grounds by damaging gardens or lawns when they dig for nuts. Squirrels can carry diseases, such as rabies, but that is extremely rare. If you hear scratching in your attic or if you see droppings, that’s an indication you have an infestation.

All About Possums

American possums are actually called opossums. According to Kings Park Patch, the North American possum is native to Long Island. Although often mistaken for rodents, they’re actually marsupials (like kangaroos). Opossums have long tails similar to rats that they use like a fifth limb. Opossums are nocturnal animals that often rummage through trash cans. They can also do damage to your lawn.  According to the San Francisco Chronicle, you can tell an opossum has gotten into your yard by checking for openings in your fence that are at least three inches in diameter. You should also look for footprints and feces. Opossums don’t dig large holes. In addition to getting into lawns and trash, they can also get in your attic.
