Raccoon dressed as a witch for Halloween.

It’s supposed to be the spookiest time of the year, but Halloween should be about spooky fun. But if you think you have a pest problem, you can have some all too real scares this year. Some people think colder weather means pest problems will go away. But you can see pest infestations in autumn and winter. While some bugs will go away or become dormant, there are still insects that are in the area in the fall as well as other types of pests like rodents. If you think they’re on your property, it’s time to call Arrow Exterminating.

Arrow will create a plan to rid your property of pests and prevent them from infesting your property.

The Insects of Autumn

As we mentioned, some insects become dormant in cold weather. According to Smithsonian Magazine, some insects migrate to warmer climates, while others become dormant. This is a little bit different from the hibernation. The dormant stage of insects is called diapause. During this time, insects will seek shelter from the cold, often burrowing underground. Some stay above ground and in some climates there are insects that can resist freezing.

We don’t necessarily see consistently freezing temperatures this time of year and you should know that there are some very spooky insects still out there in October and November. These include carpenter ants, which can dig holes in wood. This can lead to leaks and damage to your structure. In October, you will also still see yellow jackets, which are aggressive scavengers that are often seen near trash bins. Yellow jackets can sting and occasionally need immediate attention, but late November and December are good times to get rid of yellow jacket nests.

Creepy Fall Creatures

Insects aren’t the only troublesome creatures that can haunt you this time of year. You need to be concerned about rodents like mice or rats. Mice and rats can transmit diseases and can also get into your food supply and contaminate them. One telltale signs that you may have mice is if you see black droppings resembling rice inside your home. Mice and rats are very adept at living close to humans without being detected. Mice are also very efficient at surviving with minimal amounts of water.

You also should be on the lookout for raccoons and squirrels. Raccoons are Halloween pests out of central casting, because they’re creatures of the night. They can cause damage to vents and attic fans if they get inside. Squirrels can chew wires and both of these creatures can carry fleas.
