Boxelder Bug (Leptocoris trivittatus)

Question: Why are they called "Boxelder" bugs?
Answer
: Boxelder bugs get their name from the female boxelder tree they feed on.

Question: Why are they in my house?
Answer
: During the fall, they cluster around the lower tree trunk or on sunny foundations walls just before they disperse to find hiding places. After which they will over winter in cracks and crevices until spring. During early spring you will notice them coming out of their hiding spots, often a home or office.

Question: They come back every year, what can I do?
Answer
: There are a couple of things. One is to treat around the base of the boxelder tree during the summer months and again in the fall. In the fall you will want to treat the foundation of the building they are over-wintering in to keep the number down. The only sure way to eliminate them is to get rid of the tree all together.

Question: How do the get into my home or office?
Answer
During the spring the boxelder bug will emerge, many times ending up in your home.

Question: Do they bite?
Answer
No.

BIOLOGY.. The boxelder bugs go through their adult stage in dry, sheltered places where they accumulate in gregarious masses. Often times this is a building or house. When the weather warms up, the bugs leave their places of hibernation to fly to boxelder trees where they deposit their eggs. The eggs are usually deposited in bark crevices and hatch in 11 to 14 days. The Nymphs feed by inserting their beaks into leaves, fruits or soft seeds and sucking the plant juices. This will continue until the weather cools off and they will go into hibernation.

RECOGNITION. The boxelder bug is about 1/2 inch long and brownish-black in color with red stripes on the thorax and wing margins. The body is also bright red. Eggs are a rusty red color and are not often seen since they are deposited in and on boxelder tree. The Nymph will resemble an adult but do not have fully developed wings and cannot reproduce.
