Ground Beetles

Members of this beetle family get their name from their general habit of harboring on the ground, usually beneath ground cover such as mulch, landscape timbers and stone. They are found throughout the United States. Adults are about 1/16 to 1 3/8-inches long, with an elongated, somewhat flattened shape. Ground beetles are usually uniformly black and shiny, but some species are patterned or brightly colored. Most species usually infest in large numbers and are active at night.
