The scientific name used is one of convenience since there are more than 25 different species of field crickets. These insects can range from 1/2 - 1 1/4-inch long and have the typical stout body with large ”jumping“ hind legs characteristic of crickets. Field crickets are usually black, but may be brown or straw-colored. They have long, slender antennae. The females have three easily seen appendages coming out of the tip of the abdomen; males have only two.
